In 1978, a contract was signed for a Hitachi CPT (color cathode ray tube) production line in Xianyang, Shaanxi Province.

In 1979, a contract was signed for a Hitachi color TV assembly line in Shanghai.

During the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976), the Chinese people effectively lost most sources of entertainment for ten years. Deng Xiaoping believed that the provision of entertainment was essential for ensuring the stability of people's lifestyles, and decided to popularize color TV as a matter of policy.

Later, too, Western Japan Trading was involved in the construction of additional CPT plants in various parts of China, including 077 (Dongguan), 080, 081, 082 (Shanghai), and 089 (Xianyang).
